Vanessa Smith, RMT

There has forever been a part of me that has gravitated towards work that provides care for others. Even as a rebellious teenager, I spent many hours volunteering my time and amateur singing voice at the care home where my dad had lived. As a young adult, I enjoyed many years as an Assisted Living Worker for special needs adults, in between flights and adventures in Europe.

As time ticked on, the lure of education began to pull at me. Parallel to my search for new beginnings, a very special Massage Therapist in my past was sadly finishing her life story, and her passing sparked the idea of Massage Therapy as a way to channel my need to help others.

I studied Massage Therapy at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton, Alberta and completed the life altering and intense 2200 hour program, graduating with distinction in June 2010. I then mastered the provincial board exams and became a registered member with the Massage Therapist Association of Alberta. I opened my private practice in July 2010 within a Chiropractic and Acupuncture health clinic in Edmonton. Joining a multi-disciplinary team was one of the best decisions I made as I began my young career as an RMT, as I was able to draw both experience and support from my colleagues.

My partner and I made the decision to relocate to my home town of Saskatoon in 2013 to be closer to my family (I missed Broadway, really), not realizing we would be starting our own little family so soon! We welcomed our daughter in October 2013 and her little brother in August of 2016. Between babies and maternity leave, I had put my career as a Massage Therapist on the back burner.

I began working seriously again as an RMT in November of 2017 – a path that ultimately led me to Symmetry Therapeutics. I am intensely excited to join the team here in February 2018 and continue to grow as a therapist. My treatments are based heavily in the Swedish massage style, with a large importance placed on the mind-body connection and active patient participation for recovery. I am able to help with a diverse range of needs, including chronic illness and disability, acute physical trauma, pre and post-natal women, infants and children - and I have always had a special passion for my senior patients and their wonderful wisdom!
